SPRING 2024

PHILIA

Embrace this enchanting and intimate exploration of love in Philia.

Philia is one of the four Greek words for love among storge, agape, and eros. Of the different kinds of love, Philia represents friendship, and it makes us wonder how the word has come take on the meaning of deep fondness, undue fixation, or obsession. In a way, it is the possibility of depth that makes love so beautifully poignant yet terrifying as it requires in us an immense vulnerability. For ten issues, Haute creatives have unapologetically thrown themselves into their love for art, and these daring explorations culminate in this intimate edition containing all the different hues, shapes, and forms of love. The history of love is the history of Haute.

FALL 2023

LIMBO

Come traverse the enigmatic beauty of Limbo.

Limbo is a state of being, an existence of uncertainty, which walks the shaky boundary between the divine beauty of heaven and the nightmarish dread of hell. As beings who occupy this liminal space called Earth, we cannot be a part of either dichotomy and can only imagine what lies above or below. It is haunting yet beautiful. It is disturbing yet enchanting. We are conflicted between our inexplicable awe for what our mundane minds cannot comprehend, drawn to what is beyond us, yet repulsed and terrified by what is unfathomable. Threatening to blur the line between these traditionally separate realms, universes, and alternate realities, we find ourselves questioning one’s human relationship to the enigmatic beauty and enticing terror of what is beyond us within this dreamy, dark, and horror-inspired aesthetic.

SPRING 2023

IN PLAIN SIGHT

From the ordinary to extraordinary.

In Plain Sight gives our audience a voyeuristic peek into the daily life. Turning the candid, ordinary into the extraordinary — or simply admiring the ordinary. A candid approach to life, In Plain Sight focuses on capturing the seemingly insignificant moments and inspiring an appreciation for this perspective. Told both personally and from a distance, In Plain Sight showcases the intimate, untold stories of Los Angeles locals and the USC student body through introspective work alongside cinematic aesthetics of what you may have missed at first glance.

From exploring the consequences of our obsession with acceleration to projecting the future of culture as it relates to our digital world, Hyperreality is far-reaching, daring, and visionary. We could not be more excited to enter this mind-bending world with you.

OPULENCE

SPRING 2022

Step into the sparkling world of Opulence.

Enveloped in luster and grace, Opulence is the product of our exploration of extravagant wealth and influence in all senses — the luxury lifestyle, high-end fashion, representations in media among other symbols of money and power. From redressing the American Dream to criticizing the overexertion of wealth, we sought to examine the positives and perils of themes such as but not limited to beauty, escapism, superficiality, and materialism. By joining us as we peer through luxury’s glimmering mirage, we hope you see yourself within the reflection of what it means to be truly opulent.

ON THE EDGE

FALL 2021

Get on the edge of your seat.

Welcome to our experimental, alternative issue inspired by the DIY zine culture of the 90’s. Emerging from our Spring 2021 issue, “Dream State,” plunge into a dark, grungy, and heavily stylized world of student and professional work that pays homage to punk subcultures. On the Edge combines new and old pioneers of alt culture, including Joan Jett, Matty Healy, Blondie, The Misfits, Coldplay, Pale Waves, and more.

DREAM STATE

SPRING 2021

Let your mind wander into Dream State.

This past year saw many of us seeking comfort wherever we could find it. Some of us turned to our friends and family to reassure us that better days were just beyond the horizon, while others rejoiced in any good news we came across. Here at Haute, we turned to our imaginations, crafting a space where we could not only process the uncertainty that colored our realities, but ruminate on what the future would hold once the storm passed. Dream State is the product of our musings, our attempt to not only confront reality but propose what it could become when placed in the hands of change makers and innovators. By entering the world we’ve created through these pages, we hope that you can find at least some relief given the pain that has marred this year, and find inspiration in the universe we’ve laid out for you.
